I love shooting weddings and engagement sessions in Newport in the colder months! Obviously Newport is a fantastic seaside wedding destination in the summer, but colder seasons give me the opportunity to use the fantastic architecture and history of Newport RI more. Ochre court is on the Cliff Walk and right off Bellevue Avenue, so it’s convenient to lots of fantastic additional photo-worthy vistas. Within walking distance you can take advantage of beautifully landscaped gardens, cliffs stretching high over the ocean, winding stone pathways, then of course the stunning building and stone terrace at Ochre Court. It is possible to get inside of the building as well, but it requires advanced planning and permission from Salve Regina (the university that owns Ochre Court)’s permission. I can’t tell you how many past clients assume they will be able to pop into any of the Newport mansions for their sessions!I loved this client’s funky sparkly dress and her fur coats! Such a fun and different choice of attire, and also perfect for Ochre Court, like a nod to Newport’s long black tie history! It was freezing out, but these two didn't flinch! Their charisma and natural laughter made posing a breeze, I barely had to do anything!

I am in love with this Maggie Sotero gown, and also the bride that wore it. There is something so romantic about a drapey sleeve! We got a perfect fall day at Kinney Bungalow in Narragansett Rhode Island for this rustic farm wedding. Golden sun, warm ocean breeze, custom cocktails, exquisit decor by Something Borrowed and an insane party!!If you are thinking of planning a wedding in Narragansett, there are so many great venues and spots for your portraits.Kinney Bungalow at Sunset Farm is a historic and picturesque wedding venue in Narragansett, Rhode Island. This incredible wedding venue is a 140-acre farm, complete with vegetable gardens, horses and cows. It’s rustic-chic grounds offer amazing options for wedding photography. The golden light during ceremony and cocktail hour on the lawn make your candids look like a movie set. Kinney Bungalow at Sunset Farm is the last working farm in Narragansett – which means rolling lawns, florals, horses and loads of nostalgic charm. The options for your portraits are endless! For all of you dorks who are super history buffs like me….Francis S. Kinney built the Kinney Bungalow in 1899. He was a tobacco and real estate millionaire. Kinney Bungalow was built to host parties following polo matches. Kinney Bungalow was bought by the Chase/Ewing family after Kinney’s death. In addition to being a rehearsal site for the American Ballet Theater, Kinney Bungalow was a venue for numerous celebrations, dances, and parties. In 1991 the Town of Narragansett acquired Kinney Bungalow and the Sunset Farm. Narragansett Land Conservancy Trust manages the property today. A few times a year I get the pleasure of photographing a surprise engagement. I LOVE these sessions! Typically I coordinate extensively with the proposer beforehand about the location, the timing and light, who will be in attendance, and how the big moment should play out. I come up with a way to hide or blend into the scenery so as not to give away the surprise. I’m usually just as filled with nervous excitement as the person making the proposal! For this surprise proposal, Erin chose Gooseberry island beach in Westport, MA, where she and her girlfriend had enjoyed many happy walks in the past, and coordinated with her boss to “unexpectedly” get the day off of work. It was February so we had to keep a close eye on the weather. It was a chilly day but the sun was bright, and I squatted down to hide behind some tall grass and wait for the big moment. As they approached, I used a telephoto lens to capture some details of their chatting and the scenery. I texted Erin just ten minutes before they were due to arrive with a cell phone picture of the exact spot where she should propose so that I would be sure to be in the best position to capture it. When they arrived at the perfect spot, Erin got down on one knee, and popped the question! I moved in a bit closer and captured the moment as it unfolded (forcing myself stay quiet and not call out and cheer). It was a complete surprise! Following the official proposal, we made a few portraits. So… let’s talk about your proposal plan!

When I photograph kids, my goal is to create a set of photographs that are natural and candid but which also have variety. There will be close-up face shots, group shots, both looking at the camera and looking away. I like to get several that involve motion, running, jumping, hugging etc. In order to accomplish this, it’s important to create an environment where kids can be themselves. When kids are introduced to a new person and asked to do something that seems important to their parents, they get nervous. They want to please, but are never positive exactly what is expected of them. Sometimes they will misbehave to force their parent to engage with them, even though it makes the parent stressed and frustrated. Yes, I’m telling you it’s not just your kid, it’s all kids!

Getting new headshots

It always surprises me how widely varied my clients are. They come from all different places, have different tastes and communities, and completely different visions for their wedding celebrations. One thing they all have in common is authenticity. I love this. My clients are never cookie-cutter or consumed by obligations. They never default to trends because they have more than enough ideas of their own. Their weddings are completely unique to themselves. This wedding was no exception. Every single detail reflected this couple and their joy was absolutely infectious. Michaela always wanted a jade necklace, so Eric gave her one as a wedding gift, and Michaela filled an actual drop box with all kinds of perfect gifts. The reception was held at the bride’s grandparaent's house, and the tent decor was exquisite. There was an ass-grab first look, happily tearful hugs, a mom who stood in for the flower girl and a dad-dad dance! These two are an absolutely perfect match and I can’t wait to see where life takes them. They had my gif booth too, which was a big hit! I love this thing, it looks so cute at the reception and guests can text their photos and gif to themselves right away so they have it!Anyways, Michaela and Eric, you promised me a night of tequila and kareoke very soon so let’s pick a date!!!!Flowers: Flowerthyme Caterer: West Bay GourmetCake: Isis Cakes Decor & Lighting - Exquisite Events (Michaela works here!) Tent - Newport Tent by Peak

I’m obsessed with New England history, like, a little too much.Anyone who engages me on the subject almost immediately regrets it because I’m like a hot volcano filled with molten dorky anecdotes. Open the subject and I erupt. When I shoot weddings at some of the older venues, particularly the mansions of Newport and Bristol, it’s as close as I can get to seeing them as they were meant to be seen by their original builders and owners. They are beautifully decorated, with waitstaff passing champagne and hors d’oeuvres, and filled with people dressed to impress. I try to imagine all of the individuals over the years who have danced through those ballrooms, it’s like a sweet mille-feuille made of layered stories.Linden Place really let’s you interact with it’s history because much of the building is available for a couple’s use, and the rooms are filled with original art and furniture. This includes the private quarters where Cait got ready. Cait’s florals and color scheme were absolutely the perfect compliment to Linden Place’s beauty, and I definitely overheard several guests gasp with delight when they arrived! We had a bit of rain, but I never mind a dramatic stormy sky.An excellent team of vendors made the day absolutely perfect!Linden Place New Leaf Hair Salon Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul Golden Gate Blackstone Caterer Ellies Bakery PVD Donuts Viking Trolley
